About my art
Dalecarlian horses and folk costumes
As a child, I often fantasized that in the olden days, there were real Dalacarlian horses roaming freely in the forests, and that the people in the villages lived together with them in harmony.
The Dalacarlian horses I often depict in my paintings- symbolize the wild, the beautiful, the free, but also the uniqueness in all of us.
The first Dalacarlian horse began to be manufactured in Sweden in the 18th century.
In the 1830s, the horses began to be painted and given the beautiful patterns for which they are so well known today. The pattern is called "krusmålning" and is closely related to kurbits.
Each parish/area has its "own type of Dalacarlian horse" with different unique patterns adorned on its body that represent that particular place.
Some examples of Dalacarlian horses featured in my paintings are:
Bornhäst – From the village of Born outside Rättvik, probably from 1948.
Morahorse- Manufactured since the 18th century.
Rättvikshäst – Manufactured since the 1950s, based on an older horse from the 1850s.
Siljanshästen – Manufactured since the 1960s.
Leksand horse – Manufactured since 1948, the pattern is based on local wallpaper.
Ludvika horse – Manufactured since the 1980s, decorated with flowers.
Sjurberg horse – From Sjurberg north of Rättvik, manufactured since 1959.
